We hardly noticed,
sitting on sectional sofas,
projecting stills
of unspoilt landscapes
on interior walls, but it began
when hillside orchards
fell to pavement,
chain links held pets
in tract house backyards.

From fertile fields it developed
into two or three reproduction-
filled rooms per child.
We hardly noticed until
our blue tick hound,
despite his breeding,
fell short jumping a fence
and ripped open his throat.
