ONE MORE FOR THE TRAIL

That well-chilled can
waiting at the trailhead
pulled you all the way back up.
2000 feet from canyon bottom,
24 tight contours
on a map you could hardly read,
it soaked up so much
sweat.  That cold one
made up for all the water
dry with iodine
on your tongue.

And now you're headed for another
cold one, to bring you
another half-mile high
past trailhead, still aimed
for elevation.

How many more hills
that surely call
for how many cold ones
to gain the altitude,
to quench that
dust?
