Men came today and took the tree
in the lot behind our apartment.
It had charmed us into renting here,
cooling our kitchen, scratching
the window with the bay winds.
I lived with it three years
and never bought curtains.

I stopped menstruating when you left,
and my right arm pounded with pins
like it used to when you fell asleep on it.
It doesn't hurt anymore, but sometimes
it's your hair that concerns it.

Some people feel things in limbs
they lost by injury or stroke.
I thought it possible
you were never here
but for the glare off the buildings.
