STILL WATER IS DEEP — A VILLANELLE

I did not think you would recognize me,
I had no voice to make you hear;
Stille wasser sind tief.

The train from Paris to Lausanne-Ouchy
Runs day to day and year to year.
I did not think you would recognize me

In this waste land, where the narrow streets
Seem to end in the manner of a pier.
Stille wasser sind tief.

Lac Leman opens like the sea,
From the train I step into a fog, unclear.
I did not think you would recognize me.

The waters halt for winter, the key
To the darkness beneath is to come near.
Stille wasser sind tief.

Did you know still water is deep?
Thoughts of you are all I fear.
I did not think you would recognize me.
Stille wasser sind tief.
