THE MFA IN POETRY

America has produced
its share of the world's
good and solid work
in poetics, hermeneutics, and crits —
about 32.87% to be exact.

The percent drops each middle May —
schools turn out the Fine Art grad,
a farmer after planting picks up a pen,
a schoolgirl crushed in her adolescant way
lost the pimpled-love she wished she had.
A maker of a rhyme runs naked in the rain
to encourage the feel of misery —
whatever makes the mused really, really sad.
The intellect twists Zeno out of shape;
drunks pretend Dada expertise.

And out of this comes one truth,
clear and unassailable —
never turn down sex when it's available.
